“NO!” she cries out, smashing one of the other wolves in the head with a large branch she had found on the ground. She drops to her knees next to the wolf-boy, putting her head very close to his ear, and whispers, in a tone that leaves no room for argument, “Saiyuki. Get up. Get on the horse. I promise you that everything will be all right. We can run. We will survive. I promise. You just have to trust me.”
She whistles to Altair and the horse trots over, whinnying nervously at the wolves, but trusting River. She just has to hope that Sai will be able to leap onto the horse’s broad back. If he can just get up, then they will live.
A small part of River, a part that she tries very hard to push to the back of her mind, is telling her to leave the wolf-boy, to save herself, to jump onto her horse. Another part tells her that she’ll never be able to live with herself if she does what the first part tells her to. She listens to the former, and grabs wolf-Sai by his scruff and pulls

He was actually waiting for the wolves to finish him off. He couldn’t make it. He just couldn’t. But for the sake of this girl, he had to. He liked her, a lot, even if they had just met, and he wasn’t about to just die on her. He heard the girl’s words, and opened his eyes, still breathing heavily. He wasn’t feeling so good right now, but he was determined to live, just for the sake of this girl. He would live. He would live for her. He only hoped that she would help him do that. He heard her words and nodded. She was right. If he got on the horse, he was going to be alright. The only problem? Actually getting on the horse. He barely had the strength to stand, so how the hell was he going to get up on the horse? He had to though. He had to for the sake of the girl. He struggled to get up, and suddenly felt the girl pulling him by the scruff of his neck. Sai smiled weakly, grateful that the girl was trying to help him to safety. He leaned most of his weight on her as he began hobbling towards the horse. He then looked at the girl. He pushed away from her, wobbling a little a bit, and then jumped onto the horse. He howled in pain as he landed, but he was on there. He whimpered as he lay there, waiting for the girl to get on too. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - WORDS: 268

Yes. He had made it. She smiles triumphantly, then yelps as one of the wolves bites down on her calf, feeling the bone snap in at least two places. She kicks it with her other foot, suppressing a scream as it draws back with a large chunk of her flesh still in its mouth, and, ignoring the knife of pain that shoots through her leg every time she takes a step, River clambers up onto her horse, behind wolf-Sai. She tells Altair, through gritted teeth, to go. He complies, and the trio lurches off, running at top speed. She whispers a location in the gelding’s ear, ties the reins in a knot at the base of his neck, and turns back to Sai, ignoring the steady drip of blood from her calf.
She places one hand on his head, stroking him ever so softly. “We did it, Sai. We’re going to survive.” she whispers.
Well, it would be helpful if they were already at the school, a team of nurses and doctors hustling them off, putting them under… Uh, no. That would be helpful for Saiyuki, maybe, but River’s not going to swallow any of their pills, thankyouverymuch. Not after seeing what they did to Robin and Kins. She’s plenty messed up without having a microchip imbedded in her arm. But then again… If she had one of the tiny computers under her skin, she would probably cut the thing out, and then she could find out what it does. But she’d really rather not even have it there in the first place. Who knows if she can even perform surgery, let alone cut open her own wrist without passing out?
“It’s going to be alright, Saiyuki. We did it.”

He watched as the girl’s calf was ripped open, and he whined, wanting to help but knowing that he would die if he did. He ached to get off the horse and rush to her aid, but he was already injured enough as it was. He didn’t know what to do. He really felt helpless, and he hated it. He hated the feeling in general, but in this situation, he hated both the feeling and himself for not being able to help. He growled even more, angry and a bit scared for the girl. He hoped that they would make it. He watched as she limped to the horse and climbed on. He immediately scooted closer to her, trying to help support her in case she collapsed. He heard her words, but he ignored them, more focused on the fact that she was injured. Sure, he was injured more than she was, but he didn’t care. He was always concerned with others before himself, so he worried about her instead of himself. He whined, licking her hand when she patted his head. He was just glad that she was in one piece. Well. Sort of, at least. He licked her wound instinctively, trying to help her wound heal faster. ‘I’m just…glad you are…alright…Where…are we…going…?’ His whole body ached, and he just wanted to go to sleep and wake up completely pain free. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - WORDS: 243

“To the hospital.” she says, flinching at the sound of the word spilling from her lips. She swore she’d never go back into a hospital again, would never let a doctor near her again, would never let anyone near her with a knife again. And now, much to her chagrin, here she was turning and, of her own free will, waltzing back into the school infirmary-- for the second time in less than a week. The first time, at least, there weren’t any doctors or nurses, just River, Robin, and Kinkade. This time will be a thousand times more difficult for the girl.
They arrive at the school entrance, and River immediately jumps off of her mount, stumbling as she unsuccessfully attempts to land on one foot, yelping as some of her weight lands on her injured right leg. “Stay here,” she says to Sai, “Change back into a human if you can. I don’t know how adept the doctors here are at treating wolves.”
Without waiting for a response, she’s off, running through the halls, paying no attention to the trail of blood she leaves behind. The only thought in her mind is to get to the infirmary, to find a doctor, to help Saiyuki. She just hopes that she won’t pass out before she gets back to her friend.

She was hurt, and she was going to the hospital for him? He didn’t understand it. He wanted to go with her, in case something else happened, but he was too injured to even move. He hated it. He had failed in his duty to put others before himself. That was the motto he lived by. He had to make others feel better before himself. His father had taught him that when they were living together, and he had never forgotten it. He wasn’t about to forget it now. He had come this far, so why stop now? He frowned when she ran off, half limping. He smelled the blood on her, and he whimpered, still in his wolf form. He nodded at her comment, not really able to do anything else. He squeezed his eyes shut and he tried to focus on shifting, but he was too weak. He whimpered, and then opened his eyes. He decided that he was going to go find her. He didn’t care if he was injured. He wanted to help, and he planned on doing so, no matter what. He slid off of the horse and yelped, landing on his bad paw. He started to limp towards where River had run off, but he only got about five feet before he collapsed. He whimpered again, once again feeling helpless. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - WORDS: 228

It’s going against all of her instincts. Every cell in her body is screaming at her to stop, to turn back, to attempt to heal Saiyuki by herself, but she knows she can’t. She has to keep going. She has to get to the infirmary. She has to save the boy.
River pauses in front of the entrance to the infirmary, just for the smallest of seconds, then bursts through the door, causing all eyes to turn toward the girl, hair knotted and dirty, dress torn, eyes wild, blood streaming down her leg. A young nurse walks over, saying in a calm, soft voice, “What happened, sweetheart?”
The teen shakes her head, unable to say a word for a minute. After looking like a fish out of water for just a moment, she croaks, “My friend. Shapeshifter. Attacked. Bleeding. Front veranda.” And, that said, she collapses, the blood loss-- over a pint spilled-- finally getting to her. “Sai…” she gasps, and then her world goes black.
***** NURSE
It was her first day at the school. Her first day, which she thought would be just maybe a kid getting sick, maybe a splinter, maybe a paper-cut, maybe a training mishap. But, no. The crazed-looking brunette had run in, said something about a shapeshifter bleeding on the Front Veranda, and passed out. Immediately, the hospital had sprung into motion. A team of nurses had rushed out to collect the Shapeshifter, a boy turned into a wolf; another team had lifted the fallen girl and laid her on a bed, two doctors going to the girl to asses the situation. That’s all the nurse knew. They didn’t tell her anything, instead ushering her into the back room and telling her to count the sleeping pills. And that’s exactly what she did.

He was so worried about River that he would stop at nothing to find her and make sure she was better. Even if it killed him. He didn’t want this girl to die because of him. He could never live with the amount of guilt that would cause. He cold never live with that amount of guilt. He would probably kill himself if that happened. He was so determined not to let that happen. Everything happened so fast. He was near to blacking out when a whole team of nurses came out to get him. He whimpered at the movement, pain shooting up his leg as they moved him. He looked up to see River who had blacked out and was being attended to by some other nurses. ‘R-River…’ He wanted to help her so much, but the nurses were busy working on him and tending to him, and she looked like she was in good hands. He still didn’t trust the people, but he didn’t really have a choice. He looked at the nurses who were scurrying around him, saying stuff and doing things to him. He seemed sluggish. He struggled to keep his eyes open, but he lost, slipping into the darkness. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - WORDS: Here

(TIME SKIP!)
River wakes with a start, the sharp smell of antiseptic bringing her back to reality. She doesn’t know where she is, why she’s lying in this unfamiliar bed, why her leg feels like there’s a wild-fire running through it, why there’s a tube leading from her arm into a bag of blood. Without thinking, she rips the IV tube from her arm, practically leaping to her feet, hitting the pole with the blood-bag as she does. She stumbles away from the bed, feeling for the wall in the half-darkness, her breaths coming in short, choppy gasps. Then it hits her, a series of images flashing over her consciousness.
Stables. Horses. Boy. Wolves. Running. Blood. Black.
The boy. Saiyuki. “Sai!” she hisses through her teeth. “Saiyuki!” She can’t see a thing in the darkness, only the glinting of metal, the shining knives, the red lights of the machines.

The first thing he noticed was that he was human again. The drugs they had given him must have made him shift back. He was kind of glad that they had given him those drugs. He didn’t want to stay in his wolf form forever. He looked around, squinting. There were bright lights everywhere, and beeping machines. He didn’t remember where he was or what was going on. He didn’t really know why he was in the hospital either. Suddenly, it all came back to him. The wolves. The stables. River. His eyes widened. Now he remembered why he was here. He bolted upright and looked around he had to find her. He ripped the IV out of his arm and stood up. After clearing his dizziness, he half-walked, half-ran to the door, looking left and right. He didn’t care if he wasn’t supposed to be up. He was in so much pain right now, but he didn’t care about that either. All he cared about was finding River. He ran down the hallways, tears of pain running down his face. “River!” He wasn’t sure how that was going to help, but again he didn’t care. One thing was on his mind. River raises a hand to her head as an image floats into view. Blood. So much blood. A man is dying in it, lying there with no one to help him. He’s not in the infirmary, though. Not even real. It was back at home. One of her own memories, from Simon’s medical school. She doubles over and empties her stomach into a rubbish bin, the smell of sick and antiseptic overwhelming her frazzled mind. She presses her hands down on the cool tile for a moment, then, gathering what little strength she can muster, pulls herself back to her feet, her whole body trembling like a leaf.
’River!’ Saiyuki. He made it. She saved him. River turns toward the sound of his footsteps, his harsh breathing, her voice being called into the still darkness, and takes a step toward where she guesses he might be. Oww. For the first time since standing up, she notices the splint on her leg, extending from the ankle all the way up to her kneecap. It’s hard to bend her leg, but she manages to stumble with some dignity over to the doorway, looking out at the boy running through the halls.
“I’m over here.” she rasps, holding a hand to the doorjamb to keep herself upright. The loose, flimsy hospital gown they had switched her bloodstained dress for makes her feel exposed, vulnerable, easy prey, but she doesn’t have much choice. There’s nothing she can do but get Sai and haul out of here as fast as she can.

He just had to. He didn’t know what else he would do if he didn’t. He continued to search down the hallways until he heard someone get sick. He closed his eyes and shivered. He hated hearing that noise. It was just plain disgusting. He hated that. It almost made him get sick. He shook his head. That was not his main priority at the moment. The main priority was finding River and making sure she was alright. For some odd reason he cared about this girl more than himself. And that was new for him. He heard a voice, and it was River’s. He let out a sigh of relief. Despite the excruciating pain that was radiating up his arm, which was in a splint, he started towards the sound. He went down the hall, and looked in the different rooms. Finally he looked into a dark room, and there he saw River, standing in a night gown much like his and in a splint. He gasped and immediately went over to help her stand, despite his throbbing arm. “T-Thank God.” Why was he stuttering again? He could talk normal, so why didn’t he around other people? It wasn’t just her, it was others as well, like his roommates. He frowned. “H-How are you? D-Does it hurt? I-I was so worried…” His words came out all in a rush. He really was worried about her and her safety. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - WORDS: 254

She swallows hard, suppressing the lump in her throat that seems intent on cutting off her air supply. She ignores Saiyuki’s fussing, instead turning away from him and looking down the hall toward the exit. It’s maybe thirty yards away, but for River, it looks impossible. She can barely keep herself upright, let alone walk silently down a hallway. She starts to take a step forward, her bare feet cold on the-- wait. She was wearing shoes when she arrived here, wasn’t she? Those were her favorite shoes (her only shoes, actually). How could they take them away from her? A scowl flits across her face for just a moment, but it is quickly replaced with the same look of nauseous pain she had worn before the quick flicker.
“Gotta find my shoes…” she mumbles, shuffling back into the small room. Where are they? Not beside the bed, not on the table, not under the table, not by the wall… Finding shoes probably isn’t that important, but it’s a small task that River can focus on, something that seems a lot less daunting then staying in a hospital, or sneaking out of the infirmary without waking anyone.

And to think, he was the one who caused all of this. He felt so guilty about it all. He frowned as he noticed what she was looking at. The door? He didn’t understand why she was looking at the door. What she needed to do was to get some rest. “You n-need to rest…” He didn’t want to force her, but she needed it badly. Her shoes? What the hell was she talking about? She was confusing him even more by the minute. “Your s-shoes…? What d-do you mean…? You h-have to rest…” He wanted her to get better. He ignored the fact that he was in extreme pain right now. His priority was to get her to listen to him and to obey him. He didn’t want her to die on him, and if she kept going at the pace that she was going right now, then she would eventually kill herself. “Please…f-for me…” His voice was pleading now, and he fought back tears. “No, Sai.” she says, strangely forcefully, turning to face him, her head tilting back so that she can look straight into his eyes, “I can’t be in hospitals. I can’t stay here any longer.” A glint of insanity sparks in her brown eyes as images of her past, helped along by her Postcognition, flash through her mind, onetwothreefourfivesix, just a snapshot of each of them, all of them horrible and twisted in their own way.
“I have to get out of here.” she mumbles, catching sight of her shoes poking out from underneath on of the other beds in the room. River shuffles over to them, dropping down on the other bed and shoving her feet into the worn leather, twisting the laces in a quick knot. She stays on the bed, catching her breath. She still doesn’t have all the blood she needs (about a cup of it still dangles from the IV pole) but there’s no way she’s going to shove that needle back into her arm and let them pump her full of who-knows-what.
