“We are never deceived; we deceive ourselves.”
::::::::::::::::: At first, Robin averted her eyes from Kin's intense gaze. The flush she had created faded slowly from her cheeks as the nurse turned to Kin with the offering. Robin couldn't describe how relieved she was when Kin refused the pills. It was a selfish relief, she realized though. Those pills would probably help, and like usual, Robin was probably over-reacting to Doctor-like intentions. Worse off, was that the duo probably actually needed them. For all Robin knew, those pills could simply adjusted to fit their unique ability needs. To get some of her life-force back... Robin licked her lips, finding them chap dry. And nulling the pain was a bonus. Like it was, it was very tempting.
Robin glanced back over at Kin, who was obviously distracted despite his light comment on the candy. The slight grimace that filled his voice, the flicker of pain that lit his eyes as he shifted.
"I like candy," she confessed, trying to keep on the subject. A distraction was what they both needed. "...but I honestly don't think I could keep it down. Wouldn't be worth it. Plus..." She paused for dramatic effect, knowing that this would be a bomb-shell, as it always was. "...I don't like chocolate."

KINKADE i saw a one eyed, one horned flying, purple people eater!
"You what?
"Kinkade wasn't trying to be overly dramatic; he truly was shocked by this new information. That was the strangest thing! It made her seem almost alien to him." Are you serious? You know- but I- buying you a Christmas present would take actual effort! Come on. Chocolate..."Kinkade shook his head. This was too weird. No, her jumping from the roof wasn't terribly strange. But this, this was inexcusable. " What do you like, then? What else is there?" Well, Kinkade was effectively distracted for the duration, until this whole chocolate issue was worked out. Because this new discovery put them on completely different wave lengths as far as Kin was concerned.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

“It's the simplest facts that astound our friends.”
::::::::::::::::: "Skittles, star-bursts, jolly-ranchers, orange-slices, e.g." Robin smiled, leaning back into the pillow again, crossing her arms over her chest and staring up at the ceiling with a final smile playing on her lips. "Once you get past chocolate, it opens up a whole new area of option. Living in Hershey, P.A. all your life has an effect on your taste-buds."
This was how it was supposed to be.
Well, not the extreme pain and guilt and fear/suspicion part, but the conversation. Robin soaked up every second of it, without moving much of course, and enjoyed the pleasantry of simple conversation.
While it lasted anyway.

KINKADE now you're older and the weight is on your shoulder
"Starbursts and jolly ranchers and the like... they're good, sure.
"Kinkade relented grudgingly, not sounding convinced. Yes, he positively loved the taste of artificial watermelon and both candies he listed back provided that, but those were like a rare treat he'd get sick of. " Hershey, PA?"Kinkade echoed, his eyes lighting up." There's a chocolate town? Why wasn't I told of this sooner?" Maybe because few people in his life seemed to think chocolate was a cureall, and perhaps, mostly, because he wasn't an American native. America wasn't exactly casual conversation with Kins- he tended to get a bit annoyed when his friends back home spoke of it. But still! A town called Hershey, he should have been told about. " I want to see it before I die. Hershey, I mean."Kinkade grinned. " Have you been there? Is it amazing?" He could only assume it was. Very amazing. Maybe they'd hand out chocolate bars on the street, inviting people to their town. That was a good way to start a day. He could imagine it, too! A bright way to start the day, finding a hershey's candy bar in the newspaper, or something. He shook his head, trying not to get too distracted.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

“There can always be that one flaw in the plan. Search deeply.”
::::::::::::::::: Robin nodded. "I lived there. Hershey, Pennsylvania. It's on the north-east coast. And I kid you not, that when I rode my bike to school every day-- the air smelt of chocolate. But no one gave out free candy bars, sadly." "But there was always a way you could con yourself into getting some chocolate. In the lunch lines, or through prizes in school-contests. So, eventually, I guess I just stopped liking the taste, I had it so often." The girl paused, inhaling deeply and closing her eyes. In, out, in, out. Stinging. "Too much of a good thing, I guess." Another pause. "Except for hot-chocolate. It's my coffee, and as a friend of mine called it-- my drug."

KINKADE that's not the reason that i came to land i wanna get a job in a rock and roll band
When Kin asked if she'd ever been there, he hadn't really expected her to say yes. He just assumed that every American child should get the chance to see something that remarkable- the town of Hershey! He couldn't get over it. But the fact that she actually lived there, not just visited, was remarkable to him.
"You are a very privileged child. If I ever get ungrounded,
"Kinkade wasn't sure that would happen anytime soon, but if it, by some miracle, did before he turned eighteen," I'm having Shiloh drive me there. Is it far?" Kinkade knew he was in South Carolina. Er, sort of. He was on an island. But as for the rest of the states? He could maybe point some out on the map, but for more than half he'd rely on luck to come anywhere close. If you asked him, the states should have been arranged in alphabetical order. No, named in alphabetical order. That way, when he sang the 'Fifty Nifty' song that Shiloh taught him, he could be telling them more than the name of the state. " Suppose, if I could jump off a roof, I could drive a car, though."Kinkade mused, now considering the possibility of going on his own. Then it hit him. They were on an island. How do you drive to Hershey from an island? " Who builds a school on an island?"Kinkade grumbled, sounding grumpy again. Now there was no sense to having a car, or to learning to drive one, was there? Stupid island. So far from the hub of chocolate. This was problematic.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

:::::::::::::::::
“It's the allusion of control that gives us a false sense of security. It's therefore the allusion, not the surprise, that destroys us."
::::::::::::::::: "Hershey's not so special," Robin admitted, sitting up slightly in the bed. She reached upwards with aching arms and began to retie her braid. Again-- her hair wasn't wet, and she frowned. "It's basically a regular town with a huge chocolate factory in the middle. But it's about a eleven hour drive from here, not counting the faerie across the ocean back to the mainland."
Smiling, Robin tried to in-vision Kin driving a car, but couldn't. She just saw him crashing. She entertained this thought for a while, then trying to see herself driving a car. Pretty much the same results. Ah, well. At least jumping off of roofs have consistant results: Pain. Driving a car? Not so much, a broken arm here, snapped leg there...
And to his last comment? "The gifted," she replied, not really thinking when she said it. "We're here so normal people don't have to put up with us." (Eh, shorter. Running out of ideas. Again. :{ Curse my tired-brain)

KINKADE you were foolin' me once before but i tell ya, there's no foolin' me twice, no more.
Robin was probably right, he probably would just crash a car. But that was okay, his dad had a motorcycle. Maybe that could be their daring adventure; stealing his father's bike. Riding a motorcycle on an island was fun, right? Wasn't like there was a ton of traffic. The motorcycle in the sand might be interesting... Kinkade shook his head, closing his eyes. Focus. Focus. Ow.
Right on cue, the nurse returned with two Hersey milk chocolate bars. Kinkade burst into laughter when he saw them, then clutched at his chest as the ache of the movement struck him.
The nurse stared for a few moments at the boy on the bed, not sure what she'd done that was so funny. No matter. She moved to Robin's bed, handing her the chocolate, then to Kins' bed, setting it at his side for whenever he composed himself. Now that that was out of the way...
"Ready for the pills yet?"The nurse asked, her tone falsely sweet.

:::::::::::::::::
“Sometimes. A funny word. It means maybe, possibly, from time to time, now and then, every so often... but what do those words mean? ”
::::::::::::::::: Robin's long, if not sloppy, braid fell down to her back as she received the chocolate bar from the woman. It felt heavy in her hand, and Robin swiftly, out of habit, brought the chocolate bar up to her nose and inhaled. Not much, but she could just make out the scent. Robin smiled dimly and ran her fingers over the foil, before sliding the chocolate bar into her pocket beside the apple. Memories...
Then came the question, the dread question: Do you want to block the pain? Robin turned her head downwards, refusing to look at Kin. Was it fair to put them both through such unnecessary pain? Robin knew he had refused partially because she had as well. But the throbbing, the aching... Robin squeezed her eyes shut as she became painfully aware of her heartbeat throbbing loudly in her ears.
A wave of fear washed over the tiny girl.
It surprised her when her own voice came out surprisingly strong and calm, "Yes." It surprised her that she didn't run fleeing from the room as the Nurse smiled down at her. It surprised her how light the three pills felt in her palm. (Sorry that took so long. Accidentally hit refresh.)

KINKADE hate me, so you can see what's good for you.
Kinkade's laughter stopped abruptly. What? He shifted in the bed- why did it have to be his chest that was burning so intensely?- inhaling sharply at the movement. But it was worth it. He managed to sit up at the edge of the bed, his hands clutching the edge of the mattress under him.
The nurse anticipated this. These kids couldn't take the pain they were surely in. Of course they wanted the medicine. She was more than happy to give it to the girl and to retrieve the glass of water for her, too.
"Wait. Wait, Robin.
"Kinkade warned. He wanted her to wait so that he could have a moment to breath (it was very difficult to do) and so he could appeal to her better judgement. Not that he cared if she took it or not; it would probably help them both. But she had to be sure she wanted this. " Are you sure about this? You don't have to. They can't make you do anything."Kinkade's tone was soft not because he wanted it to be, but because he was finding it hard to breath.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

(ARGH! This is the THIRD time I've had to rewrite this. First: reset button. Second: Father removing iPad from hands. Third: This version. Sorry for the wait.) :::::::::::::::::
“Why is a simple quesion. Yet, why does it seem to be an endless circle?”
::::::::::::::::: Fear. Pain. Fear. Robin shook her head slowly and glanced between Kin and the nurse several times. Finally, she let her gaze rest on Kin, and she tilted her head to the side-- as if trying to clear it.
"I know," she said, so quietly she almost didn't hear it herself. And then she tossed the pills into the air, one after another.
One.
Gritty. Robin caught the first pill in her mouth, swallowing it dry and grimacing. Can't stop now-- only make it worse.
Two.
This one was worse. Bittersweet in taste, it almost went down the wrong wind-pipe. Only one more-- then she'd be done.
Three.
Robin almost missed this last one. It hit her instead on the nose and bounced into the air. Quickly, she recovered and caught it with an open and expecting mouth. Swallow-- Gone.
It was done.

KINKADE at once you learn you're safe from pain in the dream domain.
Robin, why? Kinkade closed his eyes after the first one, ducking his chin into his chest. He wasn't mad at her, wasn't even disappointed, just a little bit confused. What now? He considered refusing the pills so he could watch over her, to make sure whatever she feared didn't come to pass, but he wasn't sure he could handle the silence and the pain. So, as good as the idea sounded, he didn't think he was capable of it.
Kinkade looked up when the nurse addressed him. The nurse had watched Robin take each pill, as though she expected to be tricked by Robin. If she didn't want the water... The nurse set it beside the bed, her eyes never leaving Robin or the pills. Once all three were out of sight, she looked to the boy.
"Ready, Mr. Malixi?"She prompted as she walked from Robin and to the stash of pills across the room.
"Robin. Why didn't you take them before?
"Kinkade asked, ignoring the nurse completely. He figured he didn't have a ton of time before the pills took her away. Unlike Robin, Kin still figured they were pain pills like she had initially said.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

:::::::::::::::::
“Why is a simple quesion. Yet, why does it seem to be an endless circle?”
::::::::::::::::: The twisting began. Still sitting up, Robin's eyes closed. Not from tiredness, but more from being simply uncomfortable. Her stomach felt like it was twisting inside out. It wasn't unpleasant, just... there. Just making her feel weak, lightheaded and... how could she describe it?
Numbness took over the girl's legs, and just out of curiosity-- Robin tried to move them. Her left leg jumped slightly, before the buzzing, like it had fallen asleep, consumed it. Robin tried to move it again, but nothing happened. Now Robin was scared. Very scared. Even with her brain slowly turning itself off, like a person might wander around their house to turn off all the different lights, her terror had increased. Why had she done this? Why did she want to stop the pain? If only to feel something, was better than nothing at all. Why?
Pain.
That's why.
Kin.
That's why--
Why didn't Robin take them before? Her tongue felt dry and heavy, and it took alot to open her eyes. But she did-- and blue locked with brown. Her voice sounded faraway and distant, like a sweeping fog moving across the plains. "Because I was scared. Because I was suspicious. But you changed my mind."
Her spine, the only thing keeping her upright crumpled like a can crushed under one's boot. Her muscles, her mind protested, but they didn't listen. They were overwhelmed. She half laid, half fell onto her side, with some effort-- her legs swooping up and back onto the cot. Her head thumped onto the flattened and soft pillow, worn from use-- and averted her half-closed eyes onto the tiled floor.
"Because of you." Robin couldn't tell if it was a thought or a aloud-- but it was her, not accusing at all, hoping that now that she had--Kins would take the pills too. He needed them, she could tell-- despite his laughing jokes. She hoped that with nothing left to stop him, that Kins would meet his own needs-- not stopped by her own, almost selfish, fear for them both.
And so her eyes closed.

KINKADE i love this crazy, tragic sometimes almost magic awful, beautiful life.
Kinkade watched Robin in muted horror as she slipped away. It happened faster than he expected, and it was almost sickening to him, particularly because it felt like she was being extinguished. She clung to consciousness, even managed to speak, but it wasn't enough.
He did this? He gritted his teeth as she sunk to a laying position. He did this to her? His grip on the bed got tighter as his anger rose. It wasn't that rare- Kinkade was used to the sudden surges. The nurse, on the other hand, was a bit startled.
Kinkade wanted to do something. Anything. Yell, hit something, kick something, just move. But the pain didn't go away just because he was mad. His logic did, though. Kinkade rose to his feet, ignoring the pain as he sort of stumbled to Robin's side. When he reached her bed, he was using it for support and he was on his knees.
"I'm sorry.
"Kinkade murmured softly. placing one hand over hers." I'm sorry for changing your mind. But I know when they wear off, you'll feel a lot better. I promise, you will." Somehow it helped to be next to her, telling her. It sort of righted his own sense of fault. Then he realized he was off the bed, his chest hurt, and he didn't dare move. Okay. Bad idea. She probably wasn't even awake now. Oh, but he was. He was definitely, undeniably awake.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

::::::::::::::::: "Why is silence so suffocating? Why is this solitude so terrible?" ::::::::::::::::: Of course, she was long gone by now. The drug was specifically designed to attack empath counciousness. Each pill having it's own function, own job to keep her under. One to shut down her regular senses and to prevent thought process, another one to administer the actual drug, and the final one customized for empaths of her level specifically.
Yet, Robin's hand-- the one she had used so anxiously to give away her life-force--once to her dog, once to River, and most recently to Kin--it curled at his touch, into the first form she had used to extinguish the flame. (Lame. Ending. --Fail--)
