She smiles. He must not have meant to mention his dad. “He sounds a bit like my father. Except, you know, he wants you around and all.” No. That’s not fair. River’s father can’t help it. But… He sent her away. True, River was ecstatic at the thought of going to the School, but it doesn’t take the sting of it away. Sting isn’t exactly the right word though. It hurts more like a knife between her ribs, a gunshot in her heart.
Murder. Funny, how such a dreadful topic can make her laugh. Maybe that’s result of all the failed attempts on her life by the School. “Ha, a fee for my advice. It’s not really much use in something like this. Never tried to kill someone, myself. At least, not on purpose.”

KINKADE can we pretend i'm amazing? i can pretend i'm amaznig instead of what we both know
"Yeahh, he does,
"Kinkade's tone was quiet. Almost thoughtful. She made it sound like a good thing, but in his own mind it wasn't. In order for Shiloh to have him, Kins mother couldn't. Instead of sharing, his father had got the legal means to steal him and keep him here, on this island. Kinkade didn't let himself think about that now. Kins focused on River, smiling again. " All the better. Experts would charge more, and might be dangerous company."Kinkade chuckled. In his own mind, though, it wasn't really funny. Why? Because she implied that she had tried to kill someone. This was the sort of answer he felt needed to be explained. But he wasn't much more than a stranger now. They'd just met. Why should she share her secrets with him? Kinkade suddenly rose to his feet. " Okay. Enough talking. Let's go find something to do."Kinkade wasn't exactly sure what he wanted to do. Cooking was always entertaining, and like he said, painting was almost as engaging as a sport as long as there was a fellow painter. But, his luck, he'd chose something she hated. Well. It was a chance worth taking- choosing the wrong thing, that was." Let's make something! Smoothies, shakes, or Christmas cakes!" Kinkade grinned. " Or, well, you know... maybe something simple. I can handle hot chocolate." That statement was provided with a proud smile as though it were a feat to appreciate even though it implied simply boiling hot water and pouring it into a cup.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

Quiet. So different from the effervescence he had shown all throughout the rest of the conversation. Hm. Maybe his father was a delicate topic, something he didn’t really like to discuss. She makes a mental note not to bring it up again.
River hadn’t tried to murder. She’d tried to cause severe pain, but only in self defence. They were cutting at her brain, for Christ’s sake! While she was still conscious, even! Who can blame a girl for a little retaliation, especially in that situation? She frowns, realizing what ‘Not on purpose, at least’ sounded like. “I didn’t try to kill anyone.” she says solemnly, wanting to set the record straight.
Good, a topic change. She laughs lightly. “I can do one better-- coffee.” It wasn’t much more difficult. Grind beans, pour grounds into a filter, pour water into the machine, press the start button. Simple as one, two, three. Er, four. River stands as well, knocking clinging blades of grass from her skirt.

KINKADE one, you gotta take it kinda slowly two, you gotta hurry up and make your move three, you gotta tell her that she's pretty.
"Good- me either."Kinkade nodded, seeming to ignore the solemn tone as she assured him she was not a murderer, and was not trying to be one. If he didn't ignore it, he'd find himself again bothered by the story behind those emotions and words.
"My. I do believe your mastery could someday save me from starvation. I'll have to keep close to you- y'know, just in case this island has some sort of disaster." That doesn't affect the power supply...? Not exactly likely. Realizing this, he suddenly grins,"Grinding up coffee beans with rocks! Now that would be an interesting task!
" Sadly, the teenager was very, very likely to try it even if there was no emergency to make it even somewhat logical to do. Shi had coffee, didn't he? Well. Kinkade was going to find out the next chance he got. Kinkade began walking, his pace slow and deliberate. He wasn't in a rush, he was just walking, hoping to get closer to his destination and to have a conversation at the same time. " So, River."Kinkade began, smiling to himself. " Are you a fan of movies? You know, like, terrifying thrillers, silly kids cartoons, or maybe humorous comedies?" It seemed like an interesting thing to know about a person, especially since it was his sure-fire way to have a good time. Setting up a movie, keeping his friends stocked with snacks and popcorn, and just letting the silence prevail.. The emotions kept him from getting too bored, and well, a room full of sleepy, usually silly teens was never something to complain about.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

“Ya know, just in case we don’t have power and need caffeine. Now, that would be interesting.” She smiles wryly, knowing fully well that grinding coffee with rocks wouldn’t make a very good grind. Too unevenly sized. “Sounds like fun though.”
“Kids cartoons. Definitely. You?” Obviously not thrillers. Her life is already too much like one, no need to add another source of fear.
Suddenly struck with a sudden urge, River takes a step forward and turns a quick cartwheel, hesitating upside-down just long enough to flash Kins a quick grin.

KINKADE four, you gotta be the perfect gentleman shake the wall, make it bend.
"Certainly cartoons. Disney-type movies that are equal parts funny and touching.
"Kinkade agreed with a nod. He even kept back the comment concerning scary movies and keeping scared girls safe. Nice, Kins. That was something to be proud of. Much to his surprise River stepped in front of him. He stopped, scanning the horizon for something pause worthy. River's movement, caught from the corner of his eye, brought him back. What was she doing? He grinned in return, watching as she cartwheeled. " You know, I haven't done that since I was a kid. Not sure I could still,"The words were spoken in a thoughtful tone again. He was talking to himself, silently considering the odds of him making it in a full cartwheel without falling or getting dizzy and, in equal part, trying to decide if it was worth the risk of falling. Er, worth it in the way of reputation and impression on River, not from a pain perspective. This couldn't be too hard, though. " Let's see,"Kinkade murmured before taking a deep- very unnecessary- bracing breath. Alright. Hands up. How did she... He should have paid more attention. Took notes. " Err, wait,"He dropped his hands, thinking about this one now. Did he really want to land on his head? Certainly not.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

“Try. It’s not hard.” She tries to demonstrate slowly, hands raising above her head, tipping onto one foot, and flipping over, all ever so slowly. At least, that’s what she envisioned. What actually happened was more of her leaning onto one foot, jumping in a sort of buck, and falling flat on her face.
She laughs at herself, wiping dirt from her cheek and standing back up. “Uh, I meant to do that.” she says, her face twisting into a smile.
She can feel a bruise beginning to form on her elbow, but she ignores it, not going to let something as small and insignificant as a bruise ruin her good mood.

KINKADE no fuss when you had to ride the bus you'd just add a little blush to paralyze your school crush
Okay! Good. Where was a paper when you needed one? He watched her closely, trying to take in every detail. It helped that she moved slowly, but when she fell flat on her face, he began to laugh. He hadn't intended to, and it wasn't her he was laughing at, exactly, but it just seemed funny. He was so anxious to see how she'd done it, to see how he could pull it off successfully, and she fell. Well! If he wanted to know how to do that, he would have just went for it.
"Oh, of course.
"Kinkade nodded. Now it was his turn to sound serious, though laughter seemed to tint his tone noticeably. As a general rule, Kinkade was not very good with serious. He was, however, good at showing concern. Which was the next emotion to show up on his expression as he stepped toward Robin, tilting his head slightly to the left in a quizzical manner. " Are you okay? 'Cause, you know, falls from such heights can be rather painful."Kinkade was grinning, obviously joking with the last bit. But he was too scared to trust himself enough to cartwheel because it'd hurt, so her fall must have hurt.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

She sticks her tongue out, her eyes squeezing shut, just for a second. “Nothing wounded but my pride.” She raises her chin, defying the very notion that she, River Tam, could be hurt. Ha! She laughs in the face of pain. Well, not really, but she’d like to think she does. “And my elbow, but it’s just a bruise. Nothing I can’t handle.”
River grins, realizing that she’d smiled more today than she had in years. And it felt good. It reminds her of a quite she read once. ‘A smile is a curve that sets everything straight.’ Phyllis Diller. An American actress with Albert Einstein-esque hair, sticking straight out from her head, though River’s sure Einstein would beat Diller in a contest of wits any day.

KINKADE make the world a little colder. no more hiding in the old days.
Ecchymosis wasn't deadly, just unsightly. But Kinkade wasn't exactly thinking that. A simple bruise was a relief to him.
"Good.
"Kinkade agreed with a definitive nod. " Well, then. If you can do it, I'll try again- not to fall, but to figure out how I'm supposed to turn... You know what? The wheel was invented ages ago! I can figure this out." Whoever did figure out how to cartwheel, initially, if there was one sort of founder to the strange action, definitely was someone Kinkade respected in that moment. " Okay, here we go!"Kinkade didn't take a deep breath this time. He just took several steps forward, away from Robin, before raising his hands and trying to mimic what he'd seen her do while thinking back to being young. How did he do it when he was five? Come on, think, think... His head had to end up close to the ground, his feet above him, but his head couldn't touch. Kinkade did just that, and he actually made it in three fourths of the arc before he realized he'd done it, and let his legs fall to the ground. It was sort of like a tumble. There he was, nearly back on his feet, and he ended up rolling forward instead. " Ha! I did it!"Kinkade's tone was suddenly enthusiastic before laughter overtook him. He, well, sort of did it. Except, now he was laying on his back and not on his feet. Good enough![/blockquote][/blockquote]

The wheel. Invented around 3500 BC, or, at least, some historians believe. The wagon wheel, however, which more resembles a cart-wheel, was invented around 5 BC, experts believe. River trusts them, figuring that if it’s their jobs to get facts straight, those facts better be right, god damn it.
River collapses into hysterical laughter. Something about the way Kinkade got so excited over an almost-cartwheel oddly struck her as incredibly hilarious. She doubles over, clutching her stomach, and laughing, laughing, laughing. After a minute, she straightens back up, tears glistening in her eyes.
“Ooohhh, I’m sorry. Couldn’t help myself.” she says, chuckling softly, wiping her eyes.

KINKADE blue skies calling on blue skies don't take them away, boys, never take them.
"Aw, I don't mind. No need to apologize. I get it. Sometimes the only way to handle one's envy is to laugh.
"Kinkade explained, moving his arms behind his head. Her laughter, her happiness, was such a great emotion. It left Kinkade almost glowing, his eyes bright as ever. " That was an amazing cartwheel, though. Not quite as good as yours, I'll admit, but it was remarkable."Kinkade added, his eyes scanning the sky for a moment, admiring the expanse of blue above him. It really was a beautiful day. But his reflection didn't last long before he sat up, grinning at River once more. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

She laughs at his cockiness. So much laughter…
Suddenly, she bursts out with, “Is it weird that I didn’t so much as smile for years and now that I’m here with you, I can’t stop laughing?” As soon as she says it, River regrets it. She presses her hands to her mouth, as if that will take back the words, though she knows it wont. She begins to mumble a quick apology, but remembers what he said earlier. ’Don’t be sorry. Never sorry.’

KINKADE an ounce of peace is all i want for you.
It was so gratifying to hear her laugh. Kinkade could forget she was so sad before with so much laughter filling the air. But, her words brought the sadness back for an instant. Not smiling in years... He couldn't imagine it. His expression was sympathetic for a moment as he gazed at her. Then her reaction prompted him to smile at her, wanting to cheer her up again.
"Isn't my ego big enough without your compliments?
"Kinkade suggested, sounding as carefree as ever. He wanted to talk to her, to get to the root of the issue, but instead, he just tried to be silly. Always silly. Well, almost always. " River."Kinkade's voice was uncharacteristically serious to match his expression. It showed concern, but it was the type of expression reserved for when Kinkade expected to be listened to. " Being an empath, I know things I shouldn't about you, about how you're feeling. So, if you don't want to talk about it, that's okay. If you ever do want to talk about things I'd be more than willing to listen." It was worth offering, even though he doubted she would want to talk to him. Maybe he'd get lucky.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

Her eyes flicker down, staring at her bare toes. “I’d talk about it, but then you wouldn’t want to come near me ever again.” she says, so quietly that if you weren’t listening for it, you wouldn’t have heard.
Getting her secret off of her chest would feel like a huge burden lifted from her, but she couldn’t pass it off to Kinkade. He’s one of three people she’s met in Alexandria, and she can’t afford to lose any of them. She needs people in her life, as much as she tries to tell herself that she doesn’t.
